Omar Khan Rugs debuted its first retail collection with characteristic panache partnering with no less than iconic department store, Lane Crawford, Hong Kong. Launched officially on the 22nd of April 2017, the capsule collection named Covet is OKR’s version of prêt-à-porter for rugs – in that they’re ready-for-home. This retail experience allows clients to purchase Omar’s much sought-after rugs off the rack or even, online. Featuring 11 designs exclusive to Lane Crawford, clients may still choose from bespoke sizes and a custom edit of colour.
Omar had previously cut his teeth as head of visual merchandising for the Pedder group, which is part of The Lane Crawford Joyce Group, so this was a home coming of sorts. “As a designer, it felt like coming home and there was nobody I would rather have done this with - especially for my first retail endeavor,” reveals Omar. As for the inspiration behind Covet, Omar explains that he looked at it from a holistic perspective: “We had to really think about the wide range of customers that shop at Lane Crawford which was a challenge because it is a myriad of different people and tastes. We wanted to offer something for everybody while still keeping the hallmarks of what an Omar Khan Rug is and I think we did that quite successfully.” While having previously taken a more couture approach, Omar displayed a savvy instinct for retail with Covet: “I wanted to achieve a strong edit at a very reasonable price point with Covet. With a retail collection, I believe it is always within your remit as a designer to make sure it’s saleable while at the same time making it desirable which is why I called it the Covet collection.”
A flurry of private appointments marked the day of the launch, a microcosm of the spectrum of people who shop at Lane Crawford. Omar met regular shoppers who had bought furniture weeks before and assisted them to match what they bought with the perfect rugs. Other appointments included designers and property developers who previewed the collection or needed a last-minute rug purchase for their projects. As to whether Covet is particularly Hong Kong-centric, Omar was quick to point out that while the collection was not calibrated to Hong Kong specifically, he designed it with a view to Hong Kong’s melting pot of tastes and predilections: “Hong Kong is so diverse anyway that this collection could be sold anywhere. It was more calibrated to people rather than a place, which is why we have geometric and floral motifs, metallic and organic hues – it really is supposed to transcend a place and celebrate the multi-cultural.”
